Today, visitors can walk along different sections of what is considered the most extensive Carolingian wall in Europe. From its towers, one can view the city and surrounding towns.<\/p><p>The earliest wall was built in the 1st century BC, organized according to the Roman system; the <em>cardo maximus<\/em> (north to south) is what is known today as <strong>Street of the Force<\/strong>, while the <em>decumanus maximus<\/em> (east to west) is unknown.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28792 size-large\" title=\"Street of the Force\" src=\"http:\/\/staging.catalunyaturisme.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/girona-carrer-forca-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Street of the Force\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.catalunyaturisme.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/girona-carrer-forca-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/staging.catalunyaturisme.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/girona-carrer-forca-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.catalunyaturisme.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/girona-carrer-forca-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/staging.catalunyaturisme.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/girona-carrer-forca.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p><p>Moreover, based on some research findings, it is believed that this first wall was built on top of Iberian wall deposits.<\/p><p>During the 9th and 10th centuries, the walls were remodeled to make them wider, and several towers were constructed. A century later, the <strong>castles of Sobreportes<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/staging.catalunyaturisme.cat\/en\/girona\/\" title=\"Girona, the City that Enchants\">Girona<\/a><\/strong> were built to protect the two main entrances to the city, along with the <strong>castle of Gironella<\/strong>.<\/p><p>During the reign of <strong>Peter the Ceremonious<\/strong>, the city&#8217;s core growth promoted the expansion of the wall. The existing walls were used as a double wall, known as the <strong>For\u00e7a Vella<\/strong>. In addition, new walls were built to protect the various population centers.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-28884\" src=\"http:\/\/staging.catalunyaturisme.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/girona-muralla47-1024x690.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"690\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.catalunyaturisme.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/girona-muralla47-1024x690.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/staging.catalunyaturisme.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/girona-muralla47-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.catalunyaturisme.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/girona-muralla47-768x518.jpg 768w, https:\/\/staging.catalunyaturisme.cat\/wp-content\/uploads\/girona-muralla47.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p><p>In the 17th century, various bastions and moats were added in strategic locations, such as the <strong>bastions of Saint Peter<\/strong>, <strong>Saint Christopher<\/strong>, and <strong>Saint Narcissus<\/strong>.<\/p><p>In 1814, after the siege of Girona by French troops, the <strong>Gironella Tower<\/strong> and the <strong>Bastion of Mercy<\/strong> were constructed. From the 19th century, several sections that hindered the city&#8217;s growth were demolished, and only those that currently allow a walk through the old Carolingian and medieval walls that define the <strong>Old Quarter<\/strong> were preserved.<\/p><p>With the restorations carried out from the 20th century onwards, the remaining walls, integrated with the city&#8217;s new green areas, offer both residents and visitors of Girona <strong>a journey into the city&#8217;s past, and a unique perspective of its surroundings<\/strong>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The walls of Girona have undergone various reforms since their construction in Roman times.
